Voices in the Pines:
True Stories from the New Jersey Pine Barrens
By Karen F. Riley
Illustrations by Andrew Gioulis
From true life tales of murder and mayhem to inspiring accounts of triumph over adversity and “Pineys” fighting to protect their way of life, Voices in the Pines brings the storytelling legacy of the Pine Barrens into the 21st century. In the spirit of John McPhee’s The Pine Barrens, author Karen F. Riley—a South Jersey transplant by way of Brooklyn, New York—roamed the woods, rural communities, and farms of the Pinelands in search of compelling stories.
Combining an uncanny ear with a knack for getting perfect strangers to talk freely, Riley takes readers on an engrossing human journey into the heart of the Pines. You’ll meet artisans, activists, farmers, educators, local heroes, and regular folks in this collection of true stories, told in the words of those who lived them.

Whispers in the Pines:
The Secrets of Colliers Mills
By Karen F. Riley

The orignal that started it all...
Colliers Mills is to most, a wooded stretch of undisturbed acreage, rich in wildlife and
prime land for hunting. Situated on the northwestern fringe of the Pine Barrens, it is a
common belief that this land has existed in this condition since the beginning of time. Yet, Colliers Mills has seen prosperous villages rise and fall and history made on its soil.
It was once home to a politician destined to become the next state governor and Amelia Earhart
even graced its presence.
Originally used by the Paleo Indians for hunting and fishing, Colliers Mills is now part of the
state's wildlife management areas. As such, fees from the hunting and fishing that now take
place within its borders help pay for wildlife programs, such as the reintroduction of wild
turkeys within the state. It is a well-orchestrated balance between conservation, recreation
and preservation.
Whispers in the Pines: The Secrets of Colliers Mills is not only the story of its past and
present, but also a glimpse into its future…
